Why The Margin Call

Built for the way international A-level Economics is actually taught

Every feature was designed around one question: what does an Economics HOD at an international school actually need?

📰

Current-affairs case studies, updated every term

Every series is grounded in real economic events — US-China tariffs, the UK housing crisis, global trade shifts. Students engage because the content is happening now, not in 2015.

🤖

AI marking against the Pearson mark scheme

Students submit answers and receive instant, criterion-referenced feedback mapped to AO1–AO4. They know exactly what they did well and precisely what to improve. You mark nothing.

🎯

Spec-aligned to the mark scheme, not the textbook

Questions are written at the correct command word level — define, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss. Mark schemes are drawn from past Pearson examiner reports. Nothing generic.

📊

Every question type, every mark weighting

MCQs, 2-mark definitions, 4-mark explanations, 6–8 mark analyses, 14-mark data-response and 20-mark essays — the full range students face in Paper 1, 2 and 3.

🌍

Designed for international students

Case studies use international data and examples relevant to students in the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Africa and beyond — not UK-centric examples that feel remote to international learners.

No setup. Works on any device.

Browser-based. No app to install, no IT request, no training. Share a link in your lesson and students are practising in 30 seconds. Works on phone, tablet or laptop.

From your classroom to the mark scheme in four steps

No integration, no onboarding call, no IT ticket. Just share the link.

01

You assign a series

Choose the unit and series that matches your current topic — share the link via email, Teams or your VLE.

02

Students read the stimulus

Real data, real sources — WTO, OECD, ONS. Students engage with the economic context before answering.

03

They write and submit

Students type their answers directly in the browser. Word count guidance and question-specific prompts are built in.

04

AI marks against the spec

Instant, criterion-referenced feedback. Score, level descriptor, strengths and a single most important improvement. AO1–AO4 broken down.

Common questions

Is this aligned to the International A-level Economics spec specifically — not the UK domestic spec?
Yes. Every question, mark scheme and examiner-style feedback is written to the International A-level Economics (IAL) specification. The command words, mark weightings and AO balance reflect the IAL papers, not the domestic Edexcel A-level.
How does the AI marking work? Is it reliable?
Answers are marked by Claude (Anthropic's AI) against independently authored mark criteria written by our team to reflect the structure and demand of the International A-level Economics specification. These are not Pearson's official mark schemes — they are original criteria developed to mirror the published assessment objectives and level of demand. The AI is instructed never to award marks that haven't been earned. In testing, feedback aligns closely with experienced examiner judgement for structured questions up to 14 marks. For 20-mark essays, AO3/AO4 feedback is strong; absolute scores on borderline answers should be treated as indicative rather than definitive.
How often is new content added?
New case study series are released each term, grounded in current economic events. Units 3 and 4 are scheduled for Q3 2026. All new content is automatically available to licence holders at no extra cost.
Does it need to integrate with our VLE or MIS?
No integration required. The Margin Call is entirely browser-based — teachers share a URL, students open it and start working. There is no login system currently (teacher dashboard with logins is planned for Q4 2026).
Can we trial it before committing?
Yes — the student-facing content is free to access at themargincall.app. Request a trial via the form below and we'll arrange a 30-day full-access period for your department before any invoice is raised.
